My daughter was ready for a little change In her room, starting with her valances. We had used a clearance shower curtain to make the previous valances and we didn’t really loved them. When we found this shower curtain with the flowery pattern, we couldn’t resist it! I love the bold pattern that it adds to the room! These valances are super easy to make and so budget friendly. To make the valance I used…
1. A piece of plywood the size that I desired to cover the window
2. 2×4″ board for the back side edge of the valance
3. Screws to screw the 2×4’s into the back side of the valance
4. Batting to cover the wood area
5. Choice of fabric to cover the wood over the batting
6. Heavy duty staple gun and staples
(I made the actual valance years ago so I don’t have step by step photos but the “back of the valance” photo below will show how I created it)
I had the plywood cut to size at my local hardware store. I then cut the 2×4″ pieces of wood to size for the back sides of the valance. This makes the valance look thicker in size. I used batting and wrapped it on the front and around all sides of the valance and then used my staple gun to attach it on the back side of the valance. I completed the same with the fabric that I chose. I used this shower curtain for my fabric. We are in love with this flower pattern!
I love the fact that I can change out the fabric whenever we decide or when my kids outgrow the fabric that we chose.
I love for my kids rooms to be clean but also to be functional. I want to use elements in the decoration that they love and that they need or use on a daily basis. We are in absolute love with Hallie’s new rug from Well Woven. It’s extremely soft and cozy! I don’t know if I’ve ever felt a softer rug. It does not shed at all! I always thought with these types of shag rugs that there would be some type of shedding but there is no shedding at all with this amazing rug. We have had 5 different rugs now from Well Woven and have loved every one of them. Their prices are amazing!
I used lots of little signs here for words of encouragement and daily reminders that we all need. I need to sit here and stare at these words for a while. I filled her wood “bowl” up with rocks and shells that we have found at the beach on vacation. You can find the tutorial for these wood shelves, here. They are super easy to make and so budget friendly!
I love the words that my daughter chose for this sign on her wall! Life sure can be a storm at times, but God has a way of carrying us through…every time.
Chester is not supposed to be lying on Hallie’s new rug but we haven’t figured out how to tell him in “dog” that he can’t be on it, so he’s not quite getting the message.
My daughter and I wanted her bed to be filled with lots of pillows and coziness and a new mattress was just the ticket for a good night’s sleep! We added this amazing new “Sleepy’s Reserve Plush Mattress” from Mattress Firm and she loves it. We recently got mattresses for the whole family and we are all loving them and the comfort that they offer! They are so affordable too! Head into your nearest Mattress Firm and check out their amazing deals — especially during their Back to School Sale, now through August 14. You can also see their mattress selection online.
We made this “mood board” a while back for my daughter and she loves adding to it. She’s getting ready to start adding things for Fall. We get pretty excited about Fall, even though the weather still feels like summer here in Tucson.
I’m so thankful that you stopped by! I hope this helps answer a lot of the questions that I was receiving about the valances. I would love to hear what you think of my daughter’s bedroom refresh. It was so fun to complete with my daughter! I love these times and am soaking up all the memories while I can!

Your daughter’s room is lovely. As an older senior citizen, it wonderful to see the “word” quotes in the stores. I especially love the ones that are quoting scripture. The rug looks so soft and you can’t blame Chester for wanting to lay there. We are dog lovers and my DH fell in love with Chester the first time he saw him. This is a wonderful time of life with your children enjoy every minute of it – they grow up too fast.

You are so talented, Natalie. Her room is beautiful and I love the valances. Your choice of “fabric” is so adorable, perfect for her room. Maybe someday I will give them a go for a few of my naked windows!
